Designing Twitter Brand Emojis
As the emoji trend continued growing it didn’t take long for Twitter to get involved and in 2016 Twitter launched their very own ‘custom emoji’ feature. Custom emojis appear in conjunction with a hashtag so when a person Tweets using a special hashtag a little icon pops up to surprise and delight them. The introduction of custom brand emojis was met with a huge demand, and I began answering client briefs and tackling custom emojis designs.
When creating the tiny characters and icons I've found that it is really important to focus on drawing smooth, simple shapes that are recognisable at a miniature size (they are viewed as small as 16px x 16px on Twitter).
As UK creatives (myself and a partner in crime) we have seen our emoji designs Tweeted over 200,000 times! And, our designs have also featured off the platform in various press or as part of wider campaign activities - one of our emojis has even floated down the thames!
There were 5k uses of the emoji in 24 hours in the UK and 18k uses of the emoji in six days in the UK.
